Consumer Reports Best EReaders

October 12th, 2009 dwight No comments

Consumer Reports recently tested the top E Readers on the market, including the Amazon Kindle. Since the release of the Amazon Kindle in 2007, the market for E Readers has been heating up. Though these devices have been around for over 10 years, Amazon with its Kindle, has put E Readers and E Books on the mainstream map.

With mainstream success, more and more publishers have come on board the digital media train with many new titles that were previously unavailable. Another item of note that makes today’s EReaders more popular, is the standardization of media. Previous generations had proprietary displays and formats which made them unpopular.

With an estimated 1 million units slated to sell this Holiday Season, below are the E Readers you should consider:

CR Best Buy Value Rated  EReader: The Amazon Kindle is by far the best EReader value on the market. It falls in between the Sony pocket reader and PRS 600 in terms of price, but it offers so much more in terms of user experience than the other two readers. We found the Free 3G connectivity to be the most compelling reason to buy the Kindle. This allows you to not only download books on the go but also allows users who do not own a PC to download content. The Kindle is also a more versatile Reader since it supports more file types, doubles as a basic internet browser and MP3 player. In short, the Amazon Kindle gives its user a lot more value for their money than the other two EReaders.

also the most stylish. The new Kindle features FREE 3G wireless
connectivity so you can download books directly from the internet. Of course you
can also upload books via your PC through a standard USB port. It also has
the most capacity out of the bunch with up to 1.4gb capacity that will hold up
to 1,500 books. Another cool thing about the Kindle is the paper like display
that uses E Ink technology. Unlike displays on other devices, the Kindle has an
anti glare screen using which allows you to read it just like a book. Other cool
features include the built in keyboard for fast and easy annotations. Probably
the coolest thing about the Kindle is that it serves as more than just an
EReader since it functions as a basic web browser , MP3 player and digital audio
book player. All in all, the Kindle offers the best bang for the buck with it’s
new lower price.

The Sony PRS-600 is a step up from the PRS-300. The 600 main feature is the 6″ 800×600 resolution touch screen that allows for easy page turning at the touch of your finger tip. The other difference is the virtual keyboard which allows for quick and easy annotations.
Another item of note is that the PRS-600 is slightly bigger and heavier. All other features such as USB and 512mb storage are held over from the PRS-300. All in all, The PRS-600 is a nice reader but it is hard to justify the extra $100 for a slightly larger screen and touch capabilities.

Features:

Best Low Light Digital Cameras $150-$170

October 2nd, 2009 dwight 1 comment

For this test, we set out to find the best point and shoot digital camera for under $200 that would give us the best low light shots possible.  The requirements were to find cameras that had the highest ISO capabilities and  still maintain the $150- $200 price tag.  The sub $200 price point is probably the most competive in the point and shoot category because $200 is the price most consumers will admit to  investing on their new digital cameras. The great thing is that manufacturers know this, so the cameras in this category all have excellent features, high mega pixels s and decent  zoom capabilities.

Need a Printer for All Those Pictures? Check out the Consumer Reports top Rated All in One printers

The Winner for Best Value: The Sony Cybershot Sony DSC-W230 was the clear cut winner of this bunch. It had excellent features, great ISO capabilities that gave us excellent low light shots, image quality was superb, had the largest LCD display and the price is right. This camera had everything we wanted in a camera. We were actually amazed that such a camera could be had a such a low price.  If you are looking for an great low light camera at an excellent price, then the Sony Cybershot Sony DSC-W230 is the one to have.  View this camera at Amazon.com for the absolute best price.

The Looser: Despite having the highest Mega Pixels of the group, the Kodak Easyshare Z1475 was the obvious looser. One annoying flaw really killed this camera for us : non rechargeable AA batteries. The only place such batteries should be used is in cameras costing under $100.  At this price point, there are much better choices than the Easyshare Z1475. That being said, the camera performs on par with the others and it is capable of 14 mp. If you don’t mind AA batteries, then this camera would be ok but being that it’s  just $10-$15 cheaper than other equally capable cameras with rechargeable batteries, we just can’t recommend this one.  View this camera at Amazon.com for the absolute best price.

The Kodak EasyShare Z1485 was the lowest priced high ISO out of the bunch. It had excellent ISO capabilities up to 6400. Zoom capabilties were average at just 5x optical and 5X digital. Like the others in this group, the camera has some nice features like face recognition, image stabalization and built in auto focus. That being said, the deal braker is in the batteries. Battery life is horrible and you will be replacing batteries quite often. For some reason, Kodak is still using standard AA batteries on many of their cameras which is one of our pet peeves. No camera at this price should use non-rechargeable batteries, period.

Features:

  • 14-mega pixel
  • Up to 6400 ISO for excellent low light shots.
  • 5x Optical Zoom , 25X Digital Zoom
  • Large 2.5″ Clear Photo LCD screen
  • Scene and face recognition.
  • Image stabilization
  • Auto Focus

Comments: We found this camera to be quite capable, it actually has the highest mega pixels of the group. Low light shots were excellent, picture quality was high with its 14 mp capabilities. There is really nothing wrong with the camera functionality, in fact is is excellent. That being said, we can’t recommend this camera simply because of the batteries. If you use it regularly, even if you don’t, you will find yourself replacing batteries more often than you care to. Since they are not rechargeable, this becomes quite annoying.

$161.00

The Olympus FE-5010 was the lowest ISO tested camera of the group. That being said, low light shots are still quite good, though not as good as some of the other higher ISO capable cameras. Zoom capabilities was on par with the others with its 5X optical lens. One of the attactive things about this camera is that it is easy to use without a whole lot of bells a whistles. Great for those that really just want to point and shoot. No problems with the batteries on this one as it comes with rechargeable lithium battery. About the only place this one really comes up short is in the ISO department since it is only capable of 1600 ISO, this is perfectly acceptable for low light shots but since it is in the same price group as others having better capabilities, it doesn’t really scream value.

Features:

  • 12.0-mega pixel
  • Up to 1600 ISO for good low light shots.
  • 5x Optical Zoom , 5X Digital Zoom
  • 2.7″ Clear Photo LCD screen
  • face recognition.
  • Image stabilization
  • Rechargeable lithium ION battery included

Comments: A very capable camera this one was, it just really lacks some of the additional features that some of the other more inexpensive cameras had in the test. This one would be great for someone who doesn’t want an overly complicated camera and doesn’t have the need to take super dim shots without a flash. There’s plenty to like about this camera, it’s just that it gets lost in the bunch with nothing to really stand out with.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W230 was one of the lower priced out of this high ISO bunch. Amazingly, it also had the highest ISO capabilities as well.
Zoom capabilities were average at just 4x but it does have 25X digital zoom. The camera also has some pretty cool features including face recognition, scene recognition and image stabilization. Another thing to love about this camera is that it uses Lithium batteries not only will you
get super battery life, you will also be able to recharge them without having to constantly buy new ones. One of the drawbacks we didn’t like about is that it only supports the Sony Memory Stick format for memory so you cannot use the more popular SD media.

Features:

  • 12.1-mega pixel
  • Up to 6400 ISO for excellent low light shots.
  • 4x Optical Zoom , 25X Digital Zoom
  • Large 3″ Clear Photo LCD screen
  • Scene and face recognition.
  • Image stabilization
  • Rechargeable lithium ION battery included

Comments: We found this camera to be quite capable at low light shots. With and extremely high 6400 ISO, we were able to capture even the dimmest
of shots. Picture quality was excellent and there are also a variety of scene modes for amateur photographers to pick from. This was by far the over all winner of the bunch. It has everything you could want and nothing you don’t.  This camera could easily compete with much more expensive models in terms of quality pictures, low light capabilities and over all features.

Best Super Zoom Point and Shoot Digital Cameras

September 9th, 2009 dwight 1 comment

If a long zoom is your priority when looking for your next digital camera, then consider the models below. These models are the highest rated super zoom point and shoots tested by Consumer Reports.

CR Reports Conclusions

Best Value Super Zoom-Surprisingly, the best super zoom out of the 3 is the lower priced Fujifilm Finepix S1500FD. This camera has a high 12x optical zoom AND 5.7X digital zoom, though the 12x is the important thing. The reason why we chose this one as being the best value of the bunch is simply because it has great zoom capabilities , a very high ISO 6400 value, 10 mega pixels AND a low price. Our tests yielded stunning up close pictures even in very low light conditions. This camera simply had the best quality, all around capabilities even when compared to the more expensive cameras. So with this camera, you can get up close and personal even in very low lighting situations. This should please people who seek excellent low light and high zoom capabilities. Highest Zoom- If the highest zoom value is the most important thing for you, then the Canon Powershot SX10 IS is our choice for you. This camera has an amazing 20x zoom lens that will allow you to capture even the finest of details up close. One disappointing thing is that the ISO value is 1600 which is high by most standards but for the price, we would have liked to have seen maybe a 6400 ISO. It also has the same mega pixel quality as the Fujifilm Finepix S1500FD yet is twice the price. That being said, the lens is probably the single most expensive component of a camera so the premium is all in the lens. View this Camera at Amazon.com

Nanotechnology Targets Tumors

August 19th, 2009 dwight No comments

Nanobees are one of the latest examples of how nanotechnology may change the way mankind treats disease. In one of the latest examples, nanoparticles known as Nanobees are being tested in the fight against cancer. These nanobees contain a synthesized version of a toxin called melittin that is found in bees. The toxin, which would otherwise destroy red blood cells and other healthy tissues, is being used to target and destroy cancer cells by delivering it directly to a tumor. These nanoparticles are engineered to travel directly to tumor cells without harming otherwise healthy tissue. The particles are covered with special compounds to prevent them from being attacked by white blood cells. The result is a laser guided missile of sorts that goes directly to the affected region.

So far nanobees have been tested only on mice, with promising results. Researchers anticipate that this therapy could become widely available for humans in about five years. Two treatments making use of nanoparticles have already been approved for cancer treatments. An ovarian cancer drug Doxil, approved in 1995, and breast cancer drug Abraxane, approved in 2005.

Budget PCs and Laptops are the New Apple!

August 19th, 2009 dwight No comments

Budget PCs

Budget PCs

OK, not really because Apple still leads all makers by a country mile. That being said,  budget PC makers have made the biggest gains in the new 2009 computer rankings. It seems that this economy will make anyone think twice before plunking down a nice chunk of change for a high end PC.  Both Gateway/Acer and Compaq made a 2.8% and 5.7% respectively in the new ratings. These were the biggest gains made by any PC maker this year.

So does this mean that that these makers have made great strides in quality? Not really, these gains are more than likely due to price since both these makers are typically priced lower than the competition. It’s interesting to note that all other makers, including Apple, remained relatively flat in the ratings which are conducted by the National Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan.  What’s interesting is that both these matched HP and were a hair shy of catching Dell.  So if you are in the market for a new PC or laptop in this economy, check out Acer/Gateway and Compaq before you look into anything else. Below is a summary of the ratings and the makers’ scores:

Apple - 84/100
Dell-75/100
HP-74/100
Gateway/Acer - 74/100
Compaq - 74/100

Consumer Reports Best 10″ Netbook

August 11th, 2009 dwight No comments

Asus Netbook

Netbooks

Netbooks are one of the hottest sellers in the computer market for 2009. For good reason, they offer lightweight, portability and on the go access to the web. Unlike smart phones, they offer real keyboards for touch typing and their displays are much easier to read.

Battery life is also surprisingly good for such a small device. Most offer battery life times from 3-9 hours which are comparable to larger laptops models.

Internet connectivity is provided by built in 3G on some models and standard WiFi on others.  In addition, they offer surprisingly computing power for such a small package with hard drives ranging up to 1.6 GHz processor, 160 Gb hard drives and 1Gb of memory. In short, Netbooks offer flexible and powerful computing power on the go.

The Winner for those on the Go: The Acer Aspire One is the best choice for those wanting a constant 3G internet connection anywhere on the AT&T 3G network. It was also rated one of Consumer Reports best buys for 2009.  It has plenty of power to run just about any Windows application and unlike other netbooks at this price, it comes with a FULL version of Windows XP.  At $199.00,  you won’t find another Netbook this cheap, though it does require that you sign up to qualifying data plans. Acer Aspire One 10.1″- Best Price $199.99

The Winner if you Require Ergonomics and Extended Battery Life: The Asus PC1005h was another Consumer Reports best buys for 2009. It has extreme battery life at 8.5 hrs continuous use , laptop like ergonomics with its larger than average keyboard and excellent pointing device.  So if either of these features are important to you, the Asus is the machine to get. Note that the Asus does not have built in 3G or PCMCIA slot so if 3G is in your future, you will need a USB to PCMCIA adaptor. Asus PC1005H 10.1″ - Best price $299.00

The Winner if you prefer a Recognized Nameplate: The Samsung NC10 was the #1 Consumer reports Netbook for 2009 by 1 point over the Acer, though it is also the more expensive.  Specs are on par with the other two machines. The weight is right in between the other two and battery life was excellent at 7 hours.  Other than that, there was no other outstanding feature or quality on the NC10.  That being said, if you prefer to invest your money on a recognized name plate, then the Samsung is for you. Samsung NC10 10.1″ - Best price $329.00

The 10.1″ Acer Aspire One by AT&T is perfect for those looking for true on the go computing. It has built in 3G for internet access throught the AT&T 3G network (same as IPhone). Unlike other netbooks, this machine will give you internet connectivity virtually anywhere since it uses the 3G network, NO need to find the closest Wireless hot spot to get on the internet. This netbook also comes with Windows XP so you get a full Operating System. For such a small device, you get plenty of computing power as it has an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor, 160gb hard drive and 1gb of memory. AT&T is offering this device at a subsidized price when you sign up to a data plan contract. This one is highly recommended for those always on the go that require an always available internet connection. Click Here to View this Netbook at AT&T

The 10.1″ Asus Eee PC 1005h was selected as a Consumer Reports best buy for 2009 with its extended 8.5 hours of battery life. The PC 1005

focuses on ergonomics with a larger than average keyboard, an actual touchpad and extended 6.5hr battery life. Weighing in at a mere 3.2 pounds, the Asus offers extreme portability yet comes loaded with features found on larger more expensive laptops like USB Ports, memory card readers and built in web cam. The Asus also comes loaded with traditional XP Home and has plenty plenty of computing power with it’s 1.6GHz, 1GB memory and 160 GB hard drive.

Unlike the AT&T Aspire One though, the Asus has onboard

Wireless-B+G+N and NO on board 3G, so you will need to find wireless hot spots in order to connect. If you have an existing 3G card or plan on getting one, you would have to use a USB to PCMCIA adaptor since the ASUS does not have onboard PCMCIA slot.

Samsung NC10 10.1″ - Best price $329.00

The Samsung NC10 was selected as another Consumer Reports best buy for 2009. Specs are the same as the other Best Buy rated machines but the Samsung is also the more expensive Unit, probably due to the Samsung name plate. The NC10 is slightly lighter than the Asus but heavier than the Acer. Battery life is excellent on par with the Asus at 7 hours. As with the Asus, if you have an existing 3G card or plan on getting one, you would have to use a USB to PCMCIA adapter since the ASUS does not have onboard PCMCIA slot. Though the Samsung was rated a Best Buy by CR, we see no compelling reason why this machine would be a better choice over the other 2 CR best buys being that there is a slight price premium. If you are more comfortable with a recognized name brand, then this is the machine for you.

Features:

  • Full Windows XP OS, capable of running productivity software like MS Office, Outlook, etc
  • Up to 7 hours uninterupted battery life when in use
  • Lightweight at 2.7 pounds
